How to Brew Beer at Home
I moved to Oklahoma from Pa. about 20 yrs. ago and believe me, there is a big difference in the taste of 3.2 beer from what I was used to. I tried many of the brands that I drank in Pa. and none of them tasted very good. One Sunday, I was reading the paper and in the Parade section saw an ad to brew beer at home. I thought what the heck. So I ordered, and was absolutely amazed. The difference in taste without all the additives and preservatives was unbelievable, as was the clarity. The funny part was the company was from Pa. and I had never heard of them in 36 yrs. of living there.
The "beer" comes in a can pre-mixed, you just add water. It is easy to make about 20-30 minutes to cook, then put it in the brewing keg for 5-7 days, add the yeast, water, bring to a boil and bottle. A batch yields about 3-4 cases depending on the kind you are making. |
The hardest part is waiting for it to age (4-6 wks.) I couldn't wait and did a taste test with my first batch after 2 wks., there is a difference in taste from 2 to 3 to 4 wks., after that I didn't notice much difference. I had some friends over one Saturday and to a person they were impressed with the flavor and clarity as well. One of my friend's buddyies had been in Germany in the service and when we ran out of what was cold, drank it warm (which is not my choice) and they said that was the true test of a good beer. He absolutely raved about it.
It runs about $5 a case which is less than most name brand 6 packs. Getting empty bottles was a simple task, many bars throw bottles away and if you ask them they'll gladly give them to you. The kit comes with caps and a capper and you can purchase more. After I made my first batch, the waiting was no longer a problem, as I would just make a batch every week or 2 and soon built up an inventory. A number of friends wanted to buy it from me but I never sold any, I would give them a case and just asking them to return the bottles to me. I loved dark beer and this was an inexpensive way of fulfilling that love. Name brand dark was somewhat high so this method fit my wallet as well.
It is simple to do and the taste is well worth it. If you like a tall cold one and great taste and would like to try different types of beer this is a terrific way to do just that.
